I have resisted the digital music revolution. Don’t get me wrong, but I love to have the original packaging, as envisioned by the artist. Of course, the Compact Disc format limits us quite a bit in terms of what we can get from the artist (think about the Led Zeppelin III cover).
And now, when I see an artist has released a new album, I think about how I can get it locally, so I can get the album packaging. Then I consider ordering it online, but that doesn’t mesh with my need for instant gratification.
I can count on one hand the number of albums I’ve bought online in the last 3 years. I still buy music from time to time and promptly put the CD away in a box after ripping it to FLAC and AAC.
So now I want an new album but I don’t want to wait. The digital version is $5 less, but then I don’t have the CD. I have learned from hard drive failure that the best choice is to just order the CD.
I think I made up my mind while writing this. So I guess I am off to order it. What a tough dilemma…when will they invent a transporter, so I don’t have to grapple with the digital vs digital with media dilemma.
